Hindi: An Essential Grammar Author: R.K. Agnihotri Publication date: 2007 Number of pages: 274 Language: English, Hindi Format / Quality: pdf, greyscale Size: 53 MB
The grammar has been highly praised:
"The most appealing aspect of Agnihotri's grammar is its clear conception of its own objectives and functions. For speakers of Hindi, it is an exposition of the systemacity and rule-governed nature of their language; for learners of Hindi, it is an instrument to further the learning of the language. In its jargon-free description of the patterns of Hindi grammar, the volume doubles up as an introduction to modern grammatical analysis for anyone trying their hand at grammar construction."
What do I think? The layout of this grammar is very nice. It presents the grammar in small chunks, making it excellent for beginners. It is also recommended for speakers of other Indo-Aryan languages as an easy entry point. Introduction to the script is also included in the back.
Unfortunately, there are also downsides. The transcription is NOT "transparent and reader-friendly", although it makes sense to someone who already speaks the language. At crucial points, this book is not detailed enough (e.g. there are four wide-spaced pages only for the vitally important compound verbs). If you are at an intermediate to advanced stage, you can use it to refresh your knowledge, but it will not help at all with some of the trickier questions.
For comparison with Urdu, check out the grammar from the same series which I posted here earlier.
